The Dehradun police nabbed an inter-state Charas smuggler on Saturday with two kilogrammes of charas worth Rs five lakh. Two locals in Rishikesh were also caught with five kilogrammes of ganja. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Daleep Singh Kunwar informed in a Press conference on Sunday that he had recently ordered all police stations in-charge to conduct an

effective campaign against drug smugglers in their respective areas. Under this campaign, the police have been identifying drug peddlers and drug addicts and taking action accordingly. The SSP has directed the police to prepare a profile of such people and provide counselling in an effort to connect them with society again. As part of the campaign, the Nehru Colony police station in-charge has constituted teams to identify such persons to provide the necessary counselling and prepare a dossier on them. During one such counselling of the addicts, the police received information about a man from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh who used to supply narcotics to the addicts. The police were informed that the man would be in Dehradun on Saturday with a considerable amount of charas to sell to users. Taking action on the information, the police nabbed a man named Gulzar (40) from the Ring Road area on Saturday with two kilogrammes of charas reportedly worth Rs five lakh. The police said that the accused revealed during the questioning that he generally buys charas from two men in his village in Mirzapur and come here to sell it for a profit to daily labourers and other users. The police said that they are gathering more information about the other two men involved with the accused. The police have registered a case against the accused and he will be presented in the court soon. The police informed that the Dehradun police have identified a total of 8,646 drug addicts and have prepared a dossier of 7,745 so far. Regular counselling of such addicts is helping them as well as assisting police in nabbing drug smugglers, stated the police. The police also nabbed two local men with five kilogrammes of ganja on Saturday during checking in Rishikesh. The SSP has announced prize money of Rs 10,000 for the Nehru Colony police team and Rs 5,000 for the Rishikesh police team for their work.
