A conman from Baleswar district, who had duped a Sundargarh woman police of Rs 4.50 lakh for buying her a plot of land at Bhubaneswar and was arrested by Sundargarh police about a week ago, cooling his heels in jail now, will be brought on remand by Sundargarh police as a number of allegations against him have started surfacing.
It is alleged that the conman has duped about 16 persons from different districts in the State of more than Rs 30 lakh.
Chaturbhuj Tarai alias Deepak Panda alias Manas Das, a resident of Jugdih of Baliapal of Baleswar district, had introduced himself through Whatsapp to Hemangini Gardia, IIC, Lephripara police station of Sundargarh district, as Deepak Panda, working as a Sub Inspector of Baisinga police station of Mayurbhanj district, and had duped her Rs 4.50 lakh on the plea of buying her a plot of land in Bhubaneswar.
When Hemangini had come to know that she had been duped, she lodged a complaint and managed to get her arrested in Sundargarh.
According to sources, after his arrest by Sundargarh police, about ten youths including a few women who had become victim of his cheating in different districts, started bringing allegations against him. They alleged that Chaturbhuj was either introducing himself as Deepak or Manas and had taken Rs 1 lakh each from them by giving them fake appointment letter for Forest Guard job.
One Bimal Toppo of Rasrajpur of Sadar police station of Sundargarh district alleged that Chaturbhuj had contacted eight persons including him and had told them that he would give them job of Forest Guard and would take Rs 1 lakh each. Further three youths from Gajapati district, five youths including one Ganesh Pradhan of Riamal area of Deogarh district had also been taken for a ride by the accused.
Sources said conman Chaturbhuj used to target unemployed youths including girls, widows and also was proposing love to lone women. She was promising them to marry and later was duping them.
Superintendent of Police, Sundargarh Sagarika Nath said, “We will bring him in remand and will reinterrogate him and accordingly further action will be taken against him.”
