Illegal constructions earmarked in Kaliasot river periphery

Sunday, 24 December 2023 | Staff Reporter | BHOPAL

The work of marking encroachment and illegal construction has been completed within a radius of 33 meters from the 36Km long Kaliyasot river passing through the capital Bhopal. On the last day, a team of 10 people roamed 2 km along the river bank for a survey. The picture of who entered the 'river area' has also become clear.

On the instructions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the district administration has to remove the encroachment by December 31. The report has to be submitted by January 14. Due to the revenue of the survey using drones not matching with the map, a field survey was conducted for 4 days. However, environmentalists have expressed displeasure over illegal encroachments not being removed till now.

The district administration has made this demarcation after the order of NGT on August 11. During this period construction works were also listed. One revenue inspector, 3 patwaris and 6 corporation employees conducted this survey in 4 days.

On Friday, a survey was conducted within a radius of two kilometers in Samardha. However, crops were found flourishing here. More than 50 illegal constructions have been found in the survey. Whose list has been prepared. This list will be handed over to the SDM and then the Collector.

There are many constructions on the river banks. The team has also done their marking. Marking the pillar of the building part. A few days ago, the first survey was conducted using drones, but this was causing a difference in the revenue record.

After this the Revenue Department decided the boundaries on the basis of its map. Demarcation was done on this basis. Marking has been done on the pillars of houses and shops in many areas including Sarva-Dharma B Sector.

After the action of demarcation and marking of the district administration, the problems of the people have also increased. In fact, many colonies have developed on the banks of the river, which have been sold by the colonizers.

In this entire matter, environmentalist Dr. Subhash Pandey, who fought a long battle to conserve the river and make it pollution free said that till now the marking has been done, but the encroachment on it has not been removed, whereas the complete action has to be taken by  December 31.  At the same time, the report has to be submitted by January 14, but till now the action is very slow or we can say that action is being taken for show. So that a half-hearted report is presented. Therefore, I will file a petition against those responsible for violating the NGT order.

The river travels a total of 36 km from Bhopal urban part and joins the Betwa river at Bhojpur. About 3 thousand big constructions have been built on the banks of the river between the first 9 km i.e. Sarva-Dharma Colony to Salaiya. Most of these are multi-storey buildings. Marking has been done on these also.

Environmentalist Dr. Pandey said, I had first filed a petition in NGT in 2014 regarding the conservation of the river. NGT's decision came on 20 August 2014. I also received death threats. Income tax raid was conducted and other inducements were also given along with the money. Despite this I continued to struggle. NGT again gave the order on 19 July 2021, but there was no compliance for one year. Meaning of compliance – cleaning the river, removing encroachment inside and allowing water to flow in the river after treatment. I filed the petition again. After this the decision came on 11 August. There are more than 20 big encroachers in many areas including Damkheda, Mandakini, JK Road. The builders have deceived the people.

Dr. Pandey said that the width of the river at its origin is 80 meters.
