U’khand Congress holds protest in Doon against suspension of MPs

Saturday, 23 December 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The leaders and workers of Uttarakhand Congress organised a massive demonstration and held a march towards Raj Bhawan on Friday in protest against suspension of 143 MPs of opposition parties for demanding a statement of Union Home minister Amit Shah in the parliament on the parliament security lapse issue. Led by the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president and senior leaders such as former chief minister Harish Rawat and leader of opposition (LoP) in State assembly Yashpal Arya, the Congress workers assembled at the headquarters of the State Congress in morning from where they tried to march to Raj Bhawan. However the administration with the support of police stopped the march amid vehement protest and slogan shouting by the Congressmen. The Congress leaders courted arrest and were taken to the police lines.

In a memorandum directed to the President of India, the Congress party strongly condemned the suspension of the opposition MPs and termed the action as anti- democratic. The Congress leaders said that the opposition leaders were discharging their constitutional responsibility which is given by the people by demanding an explanation of the government in the security breach issue of parliament but they were suspended. The suspension not only shows the fascist and dictatorial character of the BJP but also is not good for a healthy democracy.

The PCC president said that the Congress party firmly believes in democracy. He said that suspension of the MPs would be written in black letters in the history of the democracy in the country. The Congress leaders said that the ruling BJP has a long history of exploiting the sentiments of the people and when this party comes into power it adopts different morals and laws for itself. The latest example of this mindset is the fact that the party has not taken any action against its MP who had issued passes to those who breached the security of the parliament. The Congress leaders demanded that the BJP and the union home minister Amit Shah should seek apology for the incident and the suspension of the opposition MPs should be revoked with immediate effect. Former PCC president Pritam Singh, MLAs Mamta Rakesh, Virendra Jati, Furkan Ahmed, Anupma Rawat, former ministers Hira Singh Bisht, Harak Singh Rawat, Mantri Prasad Naithani, general secretary organisation Mathura Dutt Joshi, vice president Suryakant Dhasmana, former MLAs Rajkumar, Jot Singh Gunsola and others attended the protest.
