Women-Led Development for New India under Modi Government: Empowering Half the Nation

Prime minister Narendra Modi's NDA government has completed nine years of 'Seva ,Sushasan and Garib Kalyan'. India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has embarked on a transformative journey towards achieving holistic development and inclusive growth. A critical aspect of this is the empowerment of women. In the last 9 years the Modi government has launched numerous welfare schemes that have aimed to empower women and make them lead India's development journey. The Modi government has taken a remarkable life cycle based approach towards women empowerment. A wide range of government programmes assist women at various stages from childhood to adulthood and even during old age to ensure their safety and empowerment

This blog post explores the initiatives and policies implemented by the Modi government to promote women-led development in India, focusing on key areas such as economic empowerment, education, healthcare, political representation, social empowerment and gender equality.

Economic Empowerment

The Modi government has placed a significant emphasis on empowering women economically. Initiatives like the Stand Up India campaign aim to provide financial support and resources to women entrepreneurs, enabling them to start their own businesses and contribute to the economy. Schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana have facilitated access to credit for women-owned enterprises, fostering entrepreneurship and financial inclusion. Additionally, programs like Skill India and Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao have promoted skill development and education for girls, empowering them to become financially independent.

Education and Healthcare

The Modi government has prioritized education and healthcare as key areas for women-led development. The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child) initiative focuses on improving access to quality education for girls, addressing gender disparities in enrollment, and ensuring their overall development. Mission Poshan fulfills the nutritional requirement of children, adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers ,Moreover, programs such as Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana encourage parents to save for their girl child's education and future aspirations. In terms of healthcare, schemes like Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana provide financial support to pregnant women, promoting maternal health and well-being.

Political Representation

The Modi government has made significant strides in enhancing political representation for women.Smt Draupadi Murmu being elected as the 15th President of India is a shining example of women empowerment. The introduction of the Women's Reservation Bill, although yet to be passed, highlights the government's commitment to increasing women's participation in legislative bodies. Additionally, initiatives like the Mahila Shakti Kendra aim to empower women at the grassroots level by providing them with opportunities to engage in decision-making processes and contribute to community development. The government has also focused on increasing the representation of women in positions of power, with the appointment of women leaders to important ministerial portfolios.

Gender Equality and Safety

Promoting gender equality and ensuring the safety and security of women have been key priorities for the Modi government. The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative not only focuses on education but also aims to address deep-rooted gender biases and social norms that perpetuate discrimination against women. The government has also taken strong measures to address gender-based violence, including the implementation of stricter laws and the establishment of fast-track courts to expedite cases related to crimes against women. Initiatives such as the One Stop Centre scheme provide support services and counseling for women affected by violence.

Social Empowerment

PM's efforts are enabling women to overcome social barriers and fulfill their aspirations. Proposal to raise the marriageable age of women from 18 years to 21 years helps with education and employment.Law against Triple Talaq protects muslim women from exploitation. Increased maternity leave period from 12 weeks to 26 weeks makes life balance for working women. All these led to social transformation.

Every flagship welfare scheme launched by the Modi government has improved the lives of women across the country. LPG cylinders under the Ujjwala Yojna have saved crores of women from chronic respiratory disorders through smoke free kitchens and ended the daily ordeal of collecting firewoods for cooking. Due to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, crores of women can access toilets at their convenience without any fear of safety or violation of dignity. Walking long distances to collect water for daily consumption is becoming history as households across the country are getting private tap water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission. As owners of the family home received under PM Awas Yojna, women are becoming active participants in household decision making.

Under the Modi government, India has witnessed significant progress in promoting women-led development. Through various initiatives and policies, the government has aimed to empower women economically, improve access to education and healthcare, increase political representation, and foster gender equality and safety. While challenges remain, the government's efforts are laying a strong foundation for women's empowerment and gender equity in India. By recognizing and harnessing the potential of women, we can truly build a New India that is inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous for all.
