AI: Productivity engine for economic growth

Friday, 05 April 2024 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

It is experienced that the Ashok Kumar Tripathy-headed Odisha Productivity Council is spearheading green productivity, sustainability and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a productivity engine for economic growth. This is done as a joint effort with the National Productivity Council.

So, when the Odisha State Productivity Council jointly with the National Productivity Council approached Biswajeet Pattanayak, President of ASBM University Bhubaneswar, a few days back to meet their students of MBA, Commerce and Information Systems and apprised them about green productivity, sustainability and responsible use of AI as a productivity engine for economic growth, Prof Pattanayak readily agreed.

Accordingly, Dean, School of Business Prof Eirene Leela Rout, Dr Ricky Mohanty, Professor of Information Systems, arranged an interaction with students of the university on March 30.

Shyama Prasad of National Productivity Council apprised the students about the productivity, green productivity, sustainability issues and the role of Artificial Intelligence in increasing the productivity of organisations.

Ashok Kumar Tripathy, IAS (retired), at present an Independent Director, Steel Authority of India Limited and president of Odisha State Productivity Council, apprised the students that Artificial Intelligence is set to be a defining future technology and how AI is a machine-based system that infers from the inputs it receives how to generate outputs such as predictions, content, recommendations or decisions that can influence physical or virtual environments.

He informed the students about European Union’s landmark legislation on Artificial Intelligence passed on March 13, 2024 and India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. He advised the students to take up certificate courses on AI available online as more and more Indian enterprises are increasing their AI adoption following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Students were asked to give their written views on Artificial Intelligence as a productivity engine for economic growth.

A similar programme had earlier been held with the students of SOA University, Bhubaneswar and another program would soon be held for the students of IIT Bhubaneswar by the Odisha State Productivity Council jointly with the National Productivity Council, said sources.
