A herd of wild elephants has once again wreaked havoc in Kudu. On Monday late night around 10:30 pm, a person was crushed to death by wild elephants in Chadra village of Kakargarh Panchayat of the block. The deceased has been identified as Mahavir Oraon (35 years), son of Shukra Oraon, resident of Chandalaso village of the block area. According to the information, at around 10:30 pm on Monday night, villagers in Badmada Itara village received information about a herd of 20 to 25 wild elephants coming towards the village. After receiving the information, the villagers united with torches, bombs and firecrackers and set out to drive away the elephants. Meanwhile, Mahavir Oraon, who was irrigating his field near the dam located on the border of Badmara and Chandalaso villages, also went to drive away the elephant.

Then the villagers and the herd of elephants came face to face near Mahavir Bhagat's crusher. Seeing the elephants in front, people ran here and there in panic to save their lives while Mahavir fell on the ground and was crushed to death by the elephants. Shortly after the accident, the villagers took Mahavir to Kudu Community Health Centre, where the doctors declared him dead after examination. Apart from his wife, the deceased has four children.

Lohardaga Deputy Commissioner Dr Waghmare Prasad Krishna immediately took cognizance of the incident, after which a compensation of Rs 25,000 was given to the wife of the deceased by DFO Lohardaga as temporary relief. After this accident, the villagers of the area are angry with the working style of the Forest Department.

People say that despite elephants continuously creating havoc in the area, no concrete measures are taken, due to which dozens of people are rendered homeless every year and there is loss of life and property. At present, there is an atmosphere of fear among the people due to elephants roaming in the area.
