A man was hacked to death allegedly for opposing to objectionable messages sent to his wife’s smartphone in the Balipatna area near here.
The deceased, identified as Akhaya Majhi of Banamalipur under the Balipatna police limits, was assaulted with sharp weapons by a group of villagers over the issue on Sunday. Akhaya succumbed to his injuries while being treated at a hospital in Bhubaneswar on Monday.
The Balipatna police detained two persons after registering a case in this regard on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim’s wife Shrabani Majhi.
As per the complaint, a local youth, identified as Dilu, had sent an objectionable message to Shrabani’s mobile a few days ago. A quarrel ensued between Akhaya and Dilu after the former’s objection in this regard.
The issue was later solved amicably at the behest of the Balakati outpost police. However, Dilu and a few others allegedly attacked Akhaya with sharp weapons on Sundy night. The victim sustained grievous injuries in his head, face, hands, legs and other parts of the body, said the complaint.
Locals rescued Akhaya and rushed him to the Balipatna Community Health Centre. He was later shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after his condition deteriorated, sources said.
