Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) on Monday intervened following clashes that erupted within the confines of Gurdaspur Central Jail, leading to injuries sustained by four police officers.
In response to the concerning news report, the Commission, led by its chairperson Justice Sant Parkash and member Justice Nirmaljit Kaur, has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter. The Commission also issued directives for a thorough investigation into the incident, calling upon the Additional Director General of Police (Jails), based in Chandigarh, to furnish a detailed report.
The Commission stated that the report is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the clashes and the extent of the injuries sustained by both inmates and law enforcement personnel. The ADGP (Jails) has been instructed to submit this comprehensive report at least one week prior to the scheduled hearing on May 23, 2024.
The order highlighted the gravity of the situation and the urgency with which it needs to be addressed. Copies of the order have been dispatched to the ADGP (Jails), for prompt compliance. Additionally, the ADGP, Human Rights, Punjab, Chandigarh, has been informed of the developments for their records. The matter is slated to be reviewed by the designated Bench on May 23, 2024.
