SAIL's RSP initiates journey towards responsible steel certification

Friday, 05 April 2024 | PNS | BOKARO

SAIL's Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has embarked on a significant endeavor aimed at achieving Responsible Steel Certification, a prestigious recognition in the global steel industry. This certification underscores the plant's commitment to upholding exemplary standards in social and environmental performance throughout its value chain.

With only 28 steel plant sites worldwide having earned this distinction, RSP's pursuit of Responsible Steel Certification places it among an elite group of industry leaders dedicated to sustainability and ethical practices. To navigate the intricate process, RSP has enlisted the expertise of M/s Bureau Veritas Industrial Services, a renowned multinational firm known for its guidance in achieving such certifications.

The inaugural meeting for this transformative journey took place at the Manthan Conference Hall of DIC Office on April 3rd, 2024. Chaired by  Atanu Bhowmick, Director In-Charge of Rourkela Steel Plant, the session saw the participation of key stakeholders, including senior executives and department heads from RSP, along with representatives from Bureau Veritas India Services Pvt Ltd.

During the meeting, comprehensive insights into the Responsible Steel Certification were shared through a presentation by  Rupam Baruah and S S De from Bureau Veritas. This was followed by an engaging interaction where senior officers deliberated on the significance and procedural aspects of the certification.

In his closing remarks, Bhowmick underscored the pivotal role of the certification in validating RSP's commitment to environmental and social responsibility, while also highlighting its contribution to fostering a sustainable society. Emphasizing on expediting the certification process, he articulated the plant's determination to achieve this milestone at the earliest.

Notably, the pursuit of Responsible Steel Certification signifies more than just regulatory compliance for RSP; it embodies a strategic imperative for long-term success and resilience. By embracing sustainable practices and adopting a circular economy mindset, RSP aims to unlock new avenues for growth, bolster its reputation as a responsible corporate entity, and earn the trust and loyalty of stakeholders.

As SAIL's Rourkela Steel Plant charts its course towards Responsible Steel Certification, it stands poised to set new benchmarks in the realm of sustainable steel production, reaffirming its commitment to excellence and responsible stewardship.
