The development comes amid demands made by the State BJP seeking a statement from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. “Bengal under the TMC has become a nightmare for women,”
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday strongly criticised the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal Government following the alleged gang rape of a medical student in Paschim Bardhaman district, calling it a reflection of a “nightmare for women’s safety.”
Junior Union minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar said, “After the horrific rape of a young woman doctor at RG Kar Hospital, yet another
horrifying crime has emerged! A second-year medical student at a private medical college in Durgapur has been gang-raped! The survivor, a student from Jaleswar in Odisha, was allegedly abducted while outside the campus and brutally assaulted in a nearby forest.”
He further wrote on the X “under the failed and lawless rule of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal has turned into a nightmare for women’s safety.
Across the state — from villages to cities, hospitals to homes women are unsafe everywhere. The administration’s deliberate policy of appeasement has crippled police investigations, giving violent criminals a free hand. Mamata Banerjee has turned West Bengal into a safe haven for rapists and criminals.”
Under attack from all sides the Chief Minister on Sunday urged girl students “particularly those from other States” not to venture out in the evening adding however that her Government would spare none who were involved in the act. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi too condemned the Durgapur gang rape incident and urged his Bengal counter part to take exemplary action against the perpetrators of the dastardly act.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women has sought a report from the Bengal Government on the issue.
Taking suo motu action NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to the Bengal asking it to file an action taken report within 5 days.
BJP leader and NCW member Dr Archana Majumder met the victim at a Durgapur hospital where she was recuperating, sources said.
