Family crisis after poll rout riddles RJD

Speculations of a family rift in the Lalu Yadav household intensified after three daughters of the leader left Patna for Delhi. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo’s daughters Rajlakshmi, Ragini and Chanda, left the 10 Circular Road residence of the family and travelled with their children to Delhi on Sunday. Earlier on Saturday, his second daughter, Rohini Acharya announced quitting politics and severing ties with the Yadav family.

The feud comes days after the RJD, led by Yadav’s youngest son, Tejashwi Yadav suffered a stinging defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections. There were no immediate comments from Lalu Prasad Yadav or any of his family members on the upfolding episode.

This is not the first fracture in the family. Tej Pratap Yadav, Lalu’s elder son, was expelled from the party earlier this year and later launched his own outfit, the Janshakti Janata Dal, which failed to make any electoral impact. Tej has frequently accused Sanjay Yadav of “wrecking the party and the family,” calling him a traitor.

Rohini accused her brother and RJD leader Tejashwi of humiliating and abusing her, claiming the confrontation escalated to the point where “a slipper was raised to hit her.”

In an series of emotional posts on social media Rohini on Sunday once again said she was subjected to “filthy abuses” and pushed out of her parents’ home despite her mother Rabri Devi and father Lalu Prasad “crying behind her.”

She wrote that she left the house “to protect her dignity,” alleging she had been “orphaned” by the behaviour of her own family members.

Rohini also referred to the kidney she donated to her father during a 2022 transplant, claiming that deeply offensive remarks were made about her sacrifice. She alleged she was taunted for having “put a filthy kidney” into her father and accused of having taken “crores of rupees and bought a ticket in exchange.” She went on to suggest that if a kidney was needed, her brother should “get it transplanted from himself or one of his Haryanvi friends,” in a direct swipe at Tejashwi’s inner circle.

Rohini’s earlier posts had already sparked political tremors, as she named Tejashwi, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Yadav, and Tejashwi’s associate Rameez as the three people responsible for “throwing her out of the family.” She claimed she had been made to feel “dirty” and “unwanted,” urging daughters across the country not to repeat her choices, adding that she now regretted donating her kidney without seeking permission from her husband or in-laws.

The explosive allegations come at a moment of crisis for the RJD, which has just suffered one of its worst electoral defeats. The party won only 25 out of 243 seats, a collapse widely attributed to internal divisions, poor candidate selection and strategic missteps. The public breakdown within the Yadav family, long considered the RJD’s backbone, has added further turmoil to an already fragile political moment.

With Rohini Acharya’s latest outburst-filled with allegations of abuse, humiliation and betrayal-the crisis in the Yadav household has escalated into a full-scale public spectacle. The RJD now faces not only the task of rebuilding after a crushing electoral defeat but also managing the political damage caused by an internal family feud that shows no signs of easing. nor have Sanjay Yadav or other party leaders responded so far.
