Bullock Cart Race To Return at Kila Raipur Rural Olympics

Saturday, 01 February 2025 | PNS | Kila Raipur (Ludhiana)

In an  announcement that rekindled memories of Punjab’s rich rural sports heritage, the state’s Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond on Friday declared that the government is committed to revive the historic bullock cart race at the Kila Raipur Rural Olympics. This traditional spectacle, once the heart and soul of the games, had been discontinued due to legal and regulatory challenges.

“The bullock cart race is a symbol of Punjab’s indomitable rural spirit and cultural pride. We are working closely with legal experts and stakeholders to ensure its safe and glorious return,” Sond assured, adding that a formal notification will be issued soon after taking up the matter with the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

The Minister’s announcement came during the grand inauguration of the 2025 edition of the Rural Olympics, often referred to as the “Rural Olympics of India”. Sond emphasized that reviving the bullock cart race is part of the government's broader efforts to restore Punjab’s sports glory and preserve its cultural traditions.

With a substantial budget of Rs 75 lakh allocated for this year’s games, the event promises to be a grand spectacle, featuring traditional rural games alongside modern sporting competitions. “These games are not just about sports; they are about community, tradition, and the pride of rural Punjab,” Sond noted.

“The event will contribute positively to establishing a sports culture throughout Punjab, uncovering talent from every corner of the state,” he said, adding that the the government has also increased cash awards for athletes securing medals at the Olympics and other international competitions.

The opening day witnessed an electrifying atmosphere as athletes of all ages participated in events such as hockey, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, and track races. The District Administration, led by Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal, ensured impeccable arrangements for both participants and spectators.

Sond lauded the efforts of the organizers and urged the families to gather at the stadium to witness the sporting extravaganza. “This is a platform for everyone — from children to senior citizens — to showcase their talents and celebrate our heritage,” he said.
