Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for a major infrastructure overhaul set to reshape the Karala–Kanjhawala region.
The stormwater drains and footpath redevelopment project on Guru Golwalkar Marg (Road No. 3) will finally address chronic issues of waterlogging, unsafe pedestrian movement and damaged roadside infrastructure, long-standing problems faced by residents of Outer Delhi.
The project spans the full stretch from Jain Nagar to Kanjhawala Chowk and further up to the Mungeshpur drain. PWD will construct new RCC drains, establish continuous footpaths, repair worn-out road edges and upgrade the entire civic corridor covering 10 km, with 5 km on each side.
Speaking at the ceremony, the PWD Minister said, “This project is not symbolic; it is a decisive answer to the problems that people have suffered for decades. Outer Delhi has lived with overflowing drains, broken footpaths and monsoon flooding while earlier governments made hollow promises. Today marks the beginning of a permanent and accountable solution.”
“What residents want is delivery, not delay. From Jain Nagar to Kanjhawala, people will now experience a complete transformation, stronger drainage systems, safer footpaths, cleaner surroundings and smoother mobility. This is the difference between talk and real work,” he further added.
The key components of the project included construction of RCC drains ranging from 1.2m x 1.2m to 2.2m x 1.6m, development of continuous, durable footpaths to improve pedestrian safety, a substantial increase in storm water capacity to end monsoon flooding and enhanced last-mile connectivity and overall public convenience.
The Minister issued strict directions to the executing agency to complete the project before the upcoming monsoon, replacing the earlier 12-month deadline. “Timely governance is our commitment. This work must be finished before the rains so that residents get real relief when it matters most. Residents of Karala, Jain Nagar and Kanjhawala deserve better, and they will get better. This is not just development; this is a promise delivered. Outer Delhi will never be neglected again,” he added.
