Anonymous letter on mass suicide by GMC students surfaces

Tuesday, 16 April 2024 | Staff Reporter | BHOPAL

A letter has surfaced on Monday regarding the working culture at  Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal. In this, describing the environment of the medical college as toxic, there has been talk of mass suicide on May 31, 2024.

In the letter, instead of name of writer, ‘The 5 Residency of Toxicity Hub,' Gandhi Medical College, Hamidia Hospital is written. The letter is addressed to the President of Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), New Delhi.

However, the name of any resident doctor is not mentioned in it. Due to this, questions are also being raised on the credibility of the letter. After the letter came out, GMC Dean Dr. Salil Bhargava called a meeting of the Junior Doctors Association.

In the letter it has been mentioned that 'A venomous greeting to whoever received the letter. In Gandhi Medical College (Hamidia Hospital), day and night, every moment, we are breathing poisonous breath. We have been part of this toxic culture for a long time. We thought that something would change after the martyrdom of doctors, but things are still the same. In the hospital one has to work continuously for more than 24 hours (sometimes more than 36 hours) without sleeping. Despite working without leave, seniors and advisors indulge in verbal abuse even when there are no mistakes. If they say something, they threaten. They say, “Shut up, otherwise you will not pass the exam” and “Degree diploma will not be given.”

If the situation does not improve in two months, we will commit group suicide.

In the letter, the five resident doctors of Gandhi Medical College have said that they will commit mass suicide in the college itself on May 31. Also, it has been said that the letter itself should be accepted as a suicide note.

It is written in the letter that if the Chief Minister is reading the letter, then your Honor should understand our problem. Because your daughter herself has studied medicine. We are also like your children. Don't consider this an unnecessary complaint. We want to learn good work. Get a degree and provide good medical services. But, the environment here is forcing us to commit suicide.

Junior Doctors Association (JDA) Bhopal spokesperson Kuldeep Gupta says that junior doctors are being made to work 24 to 36 hours in the hospital. We are abused and also threatened. It is said that if you say anything, you will not pass the third year. Will fail. All this is said by the senior consultant and even on holidays they are forced to work.

GMC Dean Dr Salil Bhargava said that information has been received about letters written to FAIMA by five residence doctors of the college. In this, five residence doctors, fed up with the toxic environment of the college, have talked about suicide on May 31. Have talked to Junior Doctors Association (JDA). A meeting has been called with JDA. If any resident doctor has any problem, please let me know. Will solve the related problem.
