Rajbhar stirs up a controversy

Friday, 08 March 2024 | PNS | Lucknow

Om Prakash Rajbhar, the newly-appointed minister in the Yogi Adityanath-led government, has found himself embroiled in a controversy following his provocative remarks while addressing a public gathering in Mau.

Rajbhar’s statements, advising citizens to opt for a yellow ‘gamcha’ instead of white ones when visiting police stations and assert authority comparable to that of the minister himself, have generated both criticism and attention.

Speaking at a gathering in Mau, Rajbhar urged individuals not to drape white gamchas but instead wear yellow scarves priced Rs 20-25, claiming that this action would compel police inspectors to view them as emissaries of Rajbhar.

He boldly asserted, “Inspectors do not have the courage to summon me. Neither the superintendent of police nor the district magistrate has the authority to summon me. If you face mistreatment from the police, assume leadership and watch as the same policeman salutes you.”

Furthermore, Rajbhar drew parallels between himself and the infamous Gabbar Singh of the classic film ‘Sholay’, hinting at a fearless and authoritative persona.

He recounted his ascent to power, emphasising his prediction of becoming a minister and subsequently fulfilling it, thus asserting his newfound influence in the state government.

Rajbhar’s remarks triggered a flurry of activity on social media, with numerous users condemning him for allegedly inciting his supporters and making sensational statements to maintain visibility.

One user remarked that Rajbhar’s comments appeared intended to provoke his constituents, while another suggested that such rhetoric served solely to attract attention.

Despite facing backlash, Rajbhar remained resolute, highlighting the stability and progress achieved under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership. He touted the absence of communal violence in the state over the past seven years and expressed confidence in the prospects of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance winning all 80 seats in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in UP. He urged people to exercise their voting rights judiciously, underscoring the importance of voting for their rights.

Rajbhar’s audacious assertions and controversial statements have sparked a discussion on the role of ministers in public discourse and the boundaries of political rhetoric. As reactions continue to pour in, his remarks are poised to remain a subject of contention in the days ahead.
