Tiger sighted in Sundargarh after 2 decades

Tuesday, 19 March 2024 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

A Royal Bengal Tiger (RBT) has been sighted in Sundargarh district after almost two decades.

This was revealed by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Susanta Nanda on Monday.

The big cat was captured in camera trap recently. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has confirmed that the tiger has come from the Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, the PCCF said.

The tiger must have travelled a few hundred miles to reach Odisha to have a new territory of its own, he said.

“Happy to share that one tiger has been camera-trapped in Sundargarh district almost after two decades. Tiger cell of NTCA confirmed it to have migrated out of Sanjay Dubri TR. Must have travelled a few hundred miles to carve out its new territory in Odisha,” said the PCCF in a Twitter (X) post.

A few days ago, the Forest Department had revealed that Odisha is home to 30 adult tigers and eight cubs. The department made the revelation after conducting the All Odisha Tiger Estimation 2023-24.

According to the census, the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Mayurbhanj district has 27 adult tigers (14 females and 13 males) and eight cubs.

One adult male tiger each was sighted in the Hirakud Wildlife Division, Paralakhemndi Territorial Forest Division and Greater Similipal Tiger Landscape, said the census report.
