Thursday, 21 March 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Two Pithoragarh residents were killed in an accident in Rudraprayag district after the vehicle they were travelling in fell into a deep gorge. The officials said that the police received information about a car crash in the Shivanandi area of the district in the wee hours of Wednesday.

The police found that the car had fallen into a 700- metre deep gorge and called the search and rescue team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to conduct a search operation. An SDRF team led by inspector Karan Singh reached the spot with the required equipment. The officials said that the team got down to the gorge and found that both men had died at the spot. The rescue team retrieved the first body and brought it to the main road via an alternate route.

However, it took them a considerable amount of time in the wee hours to retrieve the second body as it was trapped under the crashed car. The team cut down the car to retrieve the body and handed it over to the police. The officials said that the deceased were identified as Pithoragarh residents Darpan Singh (51) and Ganga Singh (31). The accident possibly occurred due to drowsy driving in the dark at night. The police have informed their families about the accident and will hand over their bodies to them after completion of the required legal procedure, the officials added.
