Young Indians (Yi) in Jamshedpur has embarked on a pioneering initiative aimed at promoting eye health among school children by introducing vision charts in schools. Recognizing the alarming lack of awareness regarding eye health, Yi has devised a child-to-child vision screening concept, empowering both students and teachers to actively participate in vision screening.
The initiative commenced with the installation of vision charts in three prominent schools: Jusco School, South Park; RMS School, Khutadih; and Jamshedpur High School, Bistupur. The ultimate objective is to extend this initiative to a total of 200 schools across the region.
As part of this program, students are instructed to stand at a distance of ten feet from the chart, covering one eye at a time while reading the displayed text. Those encountering difficulty in reading are encouraged to undergo further eye examinations. Schools will maintain comprehensive logbooks to ensure that students requiring additional testing receive the necessary follow-up care.
The project is spearheaded by the health vertical of Yi Jamshedpur, under the leadership of Umang Agarwal, with invaluable support from Dr. Vivek Kedia of Trinetram Eye Hospital, providing professional guidance and expertise.
Umang Agarwal underscored the pivotal role of teachers in identifying children with potential vision impairments, highlighting the fundamental link between clear vision and successful learning outcomes. Principal Mili Sinha lauded Yi's proactive efforts, expressing optimism that the initiative will significantly enhance awareness about eye health and contribute to overall student well-being.
This initiative is a direct result of the eye check-up camps conducted by Yi in 2023, where a concerning number of children were found to have undiagnosed vision problems. Dr. Vivek Kedia commended the initiative, asserting that it will revolutionize eye health awareness and facilitate early detection of vision issues among school children.
Present at the inaugural installation were Dr. Vivek Kedia, along with prominent Yi members including Umang Agarwal, Ankita Naredi, Neha Agrawal, Mokshita Gautam, Richa Agrawalla, and Sneha Gandhi, signifying a collaborative effort towards promoting eye health and ensuring a brighter future for the youth of Jamshedpur.
