The Honour for Women National Campaign (HWNC) has decided to launch a Nirbhaya Vahini in Odisha along with seven other States. HWNC national convenor Manasi Pradhan informed in Delhi that the Nirbhaya Vahini would be playing a critical role in fighting violence against women. Its task would include putting pressure on the State Governments to immediately implement its four-point charter of demands.
The demands include reduction of liquor trade to half its present level, inclusion of self-defence training for women in the curriculum at both school and college levels, opening of special fast-track courts for cases involving violence against women in every district and a separate investigating and prosecuting wing for cases involving violence against women. “Once implementation of these measures are ensured, we can move to the next level of bringing about administrative, judicial and police reforms,” said Pradhan
Along with the eight States, the movement would also be launched in the metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad. The first look of the official logo of the Nirbhaya Vahini is scheduled to be unveiled on December 24 at IIT Mumbai as part of a Nirbhaya Fortnight being observed by the movement from December 16 to December 29, commemorating the first anniversary of the Nirbhaya incident in Delhi.
