During 1994, a badminton competition was organised in old drama pandal of Jharsuguda town. Since then, the need of a permanent infrastructure was very much felt to fulfil the hidden talent of the players by construction of an indoor stadium-cum-sports complex in Jharsuguda.
On Saturday, this long cherished dream has been fulfilled with completion of a mega sports complex. The 2,700-seater auditorium facility has been constructed with the WODC and Municipality fund at an estimated cost of around Rs 4.36 crore.
This will develop new talents of the district, said WODC Chairman Kishore Mohanty while inaugurating the complex.
Addressing a gathering, Mohanty dedicated the auditorium. On the occasion, Mohanty also declared to construct another sports complex at Brajrajnagar with WODC fund.
The new auditorium will be utilised for the overall sports development and cultural programmes in the district.
A badminton competition was also kicked off from Saturday in the newly built Jharsuguda Biju Patnaik Indoor Stadium with participation of local players.
District Athletic Association general secretary Tapas Kumar Ray Choudhary, Municipality heads of Jharsuguda,Brajrajnagar and Belpahar, Harish Ganatra, Kishore Agarwal,Parshuram Sahu respectively and Jharsuguda municipality Executive Officer Ram Chandra Pradhan spoke.
