Modi to don a pen for readers of Thuglak

Tuesday, 15 January 2019 | Kumar Chellappan | CHENNAI

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will don the pen for the readers of Thuglak, the popular Tamil magazine founded by Cho Ramaswamy. Modi, who had been a regular participant in the previous anniversary meetings of the magazine, a major event in Tamil Nadu’s cultural calendar, told the readers of Thuglak that they were welcome to send him questions which he would answer in the next issue of the publication.

Rich tributes were paid by Modi to Cho Ramaswamy, founder editor of  Thuglak on Monday in connection with 49th anniversary of its publication.

“Greetings to the readers of Thuglak as the magazine marks its 49th anniversary. I also pay my tributes to the fearless and phenomenal Cho Ramaswamy, who nurtured Thuglak and took it to new heights,” the Prime Minister said in a Twitter message.

“I have often been a part of the anniversary celebrations of Thuglak but unfortunately, this time I have not been able to. However, I request the readers to send me their questions, which I would be glad to answer in the next issue,” the Prime Minister tweeted. His messages were read out by S Gurumurthy, the current editor and publisher of the magazine.

What marked the anniversary celebrations was the question posed by reader of Thuglal which were answered by Gurumurthy. To a question by one of the readers about the possible winner in the Lok sabha election from Tamil Nadu, Gurumurthy said the DMK has a slight edge over the AIADMK.

“This is because the DMK has a leader while the AIADMK is handicapped by the absence of a strong leader. But that does not mean that it is going to be easy for the DMK,” he said.

Gurunurthy ruled out the possibility of Rahul Gandhi becoming the next Prime Minister of the country. “The Congress, his own party, is not confident about it. P Chidambaram, described as the strongman of the party has also made it celar that Rahul Gandhi would not be the Prime Minister,” said Gurumurthy.

When asked about the possibility of Narendra Modi getting re-elected as the Prime Minister, he said it would be decided by the electorate. “People always favour a strong leader. In 1971, when I was an ordinary worker of the Congress which was led by the legendary Kamaraj, I have seen Indira Gandhi winning the election because all were against her. The situation is similar to that now.

The election has turned out to a Modi versus  Rest bout,” said the chartered accountant-turned columnist.

The anniversary meeting of Thuglak is an indication to the way electorate of Tamil Nadu is thinking  and Cho Ramaswamy used to enthral and electrify the audience with his witty and sharp observations about the political scenes getting unfolded in the State.
