With catchy lyrics and foot thumping beats, the Ranchi rap song titled ‘Mera sheher Ranchi’ has become the musical anthem for Ranchiites across the globe. Emphasizing on everything the city has to offer, the song has caught the attention of one and all.

In just over three weeks of its release in October 2019 it has got about 3.67 Lakh views and 32,000 likes on YouTube. Dhanbad based rapper and song lyricist Sourav Suman (26) feels that music is the best way to reach out to people and convey a message in a short time while also entertaining the audience. “While I was studying in Kota, I was amazed that people did not know where Ranchi is.

They would only identify with the city as Dhoni’s hometown. I would feel bad that Ranchi being such a beautiful place was still unknown. I want people to know that there is so much more to Ranchi than just Dhoni,” said the rapper.

The lyrics of the song are like “Aao swagat karun mere sheher Ranchi mein, MS Dhone sir ka ghar mere pass hi hai, 7 jharne behte sheher mein ye aam nai hai, Tera sheher dekhta beta kuch khaas nahi hai”

Sourav has not just penned the lyrics but also produced the song video. While it has been sung by Akshay Kumar, the video has been directed by NKB Pictures and the music has been composed by Didker.

The song has been shot at some of the most popular locations across the city like Patratu Valley, Nucleus Mall, Rock Garden. Jonha Falls and JSCA Stadium, among other places. The budding musician is planning to make a song on Patna- his birthplace.Sourav had earlier recorded a couple of songs but never made them public. The inspiration came after listening to a song made by Kumar on UP titled ‘UP12’. “Rap songs are like a commentary on life in general and have gained immense popularity in the past few years espically among the youngsters.

I had written a few rap songs earlier but after listening to Akshay’s song on his city. I too thought of making one on Ranchi talking about its natural beauty,” added Sourav.

Sourav has never received any formal training in music. After listening to a popular rapper from Punjab called Bohemia, he developed an interest in this field.“I was in standard IX when I heard this rapper for the first time and I used to listen to his songs on my Nokia handset. It was then that I first got to know what rap music is and started following some other rappers as well on the internet. I started writing lyrics soon after,” recalled a nostalgic Sourav.

The youngest of five siblings Sourav was born in Patna. With his father being in a transferable job, he completed his schooling from DAV Koylanagar, Dhanbad and later from DAV Bariatu, Ranchi. A BTech graduate from Maharishi Markandeshwar University, he is presently doing his MTech from BIT Sindri Dhanbad.“After my graduation I did get campus placement as well but soon left it as I wanted to pursue my passion in music.

I am pursuing my studies to fulfill my family’s dreams. My father has always wanted me to take up a government job but now when people tell him about my song he is very proud.

My mother has always supported me,” added Sourav. His father Krishna Prasad Singh is presently posted in Hazaribagh while his mother Chandra Prabha is a home maker.
