To mark the National Emergency of June 25, 1975 and the role played by Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan in launching a country-wide mass protest against it imposed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a commemorative meeting was organised by Jaya Prakash Narayan International Centre for Study and Development, New Delhi in collaboration with Lokatantra Senani Sangha, Odisha here on Wednesday.
The meeting chaired by Samanta Kranti Dal State president Prashant Mishra felicitated former Minister and senior BJP leader Biswa Bhushan Harichandan, veteran Communist leader and former Bhubaneswar MP Shivaji Patnaik, former MLA and trade unionist Rajendra Singh and social worker from Kendrapada Hrushikesh Rath.
A campaign ‘Save Democracy’ was launched in the meeting under the leadership of former Union Minister Braja Kishore Tripathy, who was also the convenor of the meeting.
The speakers at the meeting stressed the need for awakening youth on ill effects of Emergency and derailment of democracy by vested interests.
They also called upon the audience to take the oath to save democracy which is threatened by various forces. The meeting was coordinated by Pravas Samantray and Sharada Prasanna Swain and the vote of thanks was proposed by Sudarshan Chhotoray.
