Kalyan: Will reply on Babri demolition issue in court

Saturday, 14 September 2019 | PNS | Lucknow

Bharatiya Janata Party’s veteran leader Kalyan Singh, who was chief minister of Uttar Pradesh at the time of Babri mosque demolition on December 6, 1992, said he would reply on the demolition case in court and not to anyone else.

“The case is in the Supreme Court and we will wait for its decision. We don’t know what will be the judgement — in our favour or against us. Once the judgement is there, the Centre’s role will come into play. My take on the subject is clear. I don’t want to do politics on this issue, but all parties should make their stands clear. The Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Congress and others have not made their stance clear on the issue,” Singh said.

“I have no problem in deposing before the court. I will go to the court whenever I am summoned,” said Singh, who earlier this week formally rejoined the BJP after completing a five-year term as Governor of Rajasthan.

The 87-year-old politician’s comeback also signalled the return of BJP’s backward face to active politics in his home turf.

Being the Governor of a state, Kalyan Singh could not be served a summon on the Babri masjid demolition case in the last five years as he enjoyed immunity on account of holding a Constitutional post. Now that he holds no post, the court can summon him for investigation.

The veteran leader further said, “My role in the party is like that of an ordinary worker. I will do whatever the party asks me to. I am not a competitor for anyone, I will be companion to all. I will work under directions of (Narendra) Modiji at the Centre and Yogiji (Adityanath) in UP. My role in UP has not been decided till now.”

The former chief minister also claimed that BJP was now unbeatable in Uttar Pradesh and there was no alternative to the party, be it at the Centre or the state.

“Many parties are being formed but they split up. In such a scenario, no other party can earn the confidence of the people like the BJP,” he said.

On the prospects of the SP and the BSP making a comeback in UP, Singh said, “Their return is not possible. These parties and their leaders have lost people’s faith. The BJP is surging ahead due to the work it is doing. At present, the BJP has the maximum number of members. There is no alternative to Narendra Modi at the Centre and Yogi Adityanath in Uttar Pradesh.”
