Pilates, shattering myths one exercise at a time

Monday, 23 December 2019 | PNS | Dehradun

Shattering various myths and stereotypes about Pilates being a slow process to achieve results and that too only for women, in Dehradun the men and women of Dehradun have taken up enthusiastically to this form of exercise.

Fahad Anjum, co-founder of Koko Power Studio which claims to be the first and only Pilates and personal training studio in Dehradun, explains the misconceptions related to this form of exercise.

“Just like there is a myth that body building and weight training is only for males, so is a widespread myth towards Pilates that it caters to females only. Interesting fact is that Pilates equipment came into existence during the world war and were originally developed to ensure speedy recovery of the injured soldiers so terming it useless for men would be incorrect,” said Anjum.

With people from different walks of life adopting this comparatively new form of exercise in Dehradun, the fitness studio has taken it to another level for many of its clients.

“I feel a lot more confident as it has transformed my body completely. Pilates has not just helped me to manage my weight but has also helped me to gain strength and balance,” said a Pilates enthusiast Mamta Matta.

Another regular Akshay Joshi explained how he was gaining weight consistently even though he was going to the gym regularly. “I was gaining weight even after hitting the gym for hours.

The doctors asked me to stop exercising as I started to develop backaches. Pilates and functional training has improved my medical condition as well,” he said. This form of exercise was originally developed by Joseph Pilates to help strengthen and condition muscles. “Pilates is an amalgamation of power yoga and strength.

It helps you to realise your own inner strength. A person who wants to get fit must learn to conquer his/her own body weight first,” said co-founder of Koko Power Studio, Chetna Gurung.  It is very important to understand the body type. We must know which form of exercise suits our body. The one which works for you might not work for me,” she added.
