Adevice to provide medical and emotional support to the elderly caught the attention of people in a science exhibition organized at Science Centre, Chiraundi, on Thursday.

Vatsal Jha, a student of class 9 of St. Xavier’s School Bokaro came up with this innovative idea where a backpack is equipped with all the important medicines and installed with an interactive device to help the old people meet their medical as well as emotional needs.

“I designed this device thinking of my grandparents who live alone in the village. At times they get really lonely and sometimes they fall sick with no one to help them. This device will help meet both their needs,” Jha said.

The interactive software fitted in the backpack is connected to headphones and microphones in which if a person who is unwell, can speak and the software in return will not just suggest the ailment, but will also connect to the nearest doctor available and book an appointment.

Similarly, if a person is unhappy, they can say it out on the microphone and in return the software will play a song or joke or connect a call to the relatives of the person, which would work as a mood lifter.

“Today, many old people stay alone as their children are working in other cities. This device can be a solution to all their problems,” said Jha, who won the first prize in the competition. Innovative ideas based on solving problems of the modern society were the focus of the science exhibition.

The exhibition was a part of ‘Connectech -19’, a programme organized by Jharkhand Science, technology and Innovation Council (JSTIC) and University of Engineering and Management, Jaipur.

Executive director of JSTIC, GSP Gupta said, “The programme has been organized to create awareness and develop scientific temper among school students. Around 380 students of class 9 to 12 from 40 schools across the state participated in the programme.”

The competitions were divided in four categories including Nirman which included making scientific models, tech art a technical drawing competition, Pythagoras Star and Pythagoras Pro which were quizzes on mathematics and physics for class 9-10 and 11-12.

The top three students in all the four competitions will be given certificates and cash reward of Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000and Rs 2,000 for 1st, 2ndand 3rd positions, respectively.

Ranendra Kumar, secretary of Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) who was the chief guest of the inaugural ceremony said, “Such programmes should be organized frequently as the more people are inclined towards science, superstition in society will automatically reduce.”
