Shivanand plans hunger strike from August 3

Wednesday, 15 July 2020 | PNS | Haridwar

Matri Sadan head Swami Shivanand, who has been raising his voice against illegal mining in the Ganga for a long time, has decided to sit on a protest fast again. He has decided to sit on a hunger strike from August 3.

Shivanand, who had ended his earlier fast on March 29 due to the lockdown, has decided to go on hunger strike from August 3 in support of five demands. He is demanding that all proposed and under-construction hydroelectric projects on Ganga and its tributaries should be stopped. Mining in the Ganga and its tributaries in Haridwar should be completely stopped and stone crushers should also be stopped within a five kilometre range.

He is also demanding implementation of the Ganga Act and formation of Ganga Bhakt Parishad comprising persons devoted to the Ganga.

The death of Gyan Swaroop Sanand should also be investigated, said Shivanand. He said that he will stop eating food on August 3 and also give up water a few days later if no action is taken on his demands.
