Samajwadi Party leader and Rajya Sabha member Ram Gopal Yadav demanded action against Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of Allahabad High Court for his remark that political rallies should be banned and assembly election should be postponed in Uttar Pradesh in view of the emergence and spread of Omicron variant of novel coronavirus.
“It is unfortunate that people sitting in important constitutional positions are making such observations. The Supreme Court should take suo motu cognisance of the observation by the Allahabad High Court judge and take action against him. Nobody had demanded this and there was no such prayer before the Allahabad High Court to dispose of,†the SP leader said.
On Thursday, while granting bail to an accused in a criminal case, Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav drew attention to the rise in cases of coronavirus’ Omicron variant and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take strong steps and consider stopping and postponing rallies, meetings and assembly elections. He also said that if possible, the elections schedule in February should be postponed by one or two months because only if life continues, then election rallies would continue.
Praising the prime minister, Justice Yadav said, “Our honourable prime minister has begun an exercise for the vaccination of such a large population in the country. This is praiseworthy and the court praises it. We request the honourable prime minister to take steps and in view of the frightening situation, consider stopping and postponing rallies and elections.’’
