Astroturf | Know the mind & seek the self

“Why do you want everybody to become a seeker?” asked a literary agent while going through the synopsis of my book: God or No God — “Awareness enriches life”. I am not suggesting people seek God for grant of boons. I wish them to seek their own self, which means exploring the making of one’s individual mind — its inherent limitations and potential. The limitations stand in way of potential from playing out in full. If we identify, acknowledge and address our inherent limitations, in the first place, the potential side will play out unhindered. Purified thus, if we further explore our mind, we could hit upon the treasure trove, mostly lying dormant because of our ignorance. We may then have access to the full landscape of mind, whence it will know no limits.

Ordinarily, however, we seldom care to explore our mind. We just carry faith in the future, which raises our hopes and aspirations. Accordingly, one tries to explore future prospects, not realising that future is uncertain. It is subject to so many variables. For, dynamics of every emerging moment, and thereby it’s callings, is quite at variance with those in the past. If future offers fresh opportunities, it also throws unforeseen challenges, sometimes difficult to contend with. Often it becomes difficult to find answer by our rational mind. For, rational mind is guided by experiences had in the past. So, often we come under acute pressure, difficult to bear with. The question now is: How to overcome such situations? That makes exploring one’s mind imperative. For, mind has immense potential, which unfolded in full could do anything.

Here, I recall Swami Vivekanand’s saying: “History of the world is the history of few men who had faith in themselves. Faith calls out divinity within; you can do anything. You fail in life because you have not strived sufficiently to unfold the immense power within.”

We are all aware that all actions on our part are steered through by mind, which defines and then drive them through the functional mandate of a being. For, every act is first ideated, objectified, articulated, and then willed in mind before being put into motion. But mind does not get going by itself. It is set into motion primarily by in-store desires that are nothing but reflection of Karmic accruals carried over from the past birth, which varies from person-to-person, according to different sets of experiences one would have gone through, making each being unique. That holds the key to our desire and thought trends, which come into play involuntarily. We, thus, are born with a preconditioned mind, which restricts our scope of vision and with obvious consequences. The question now is: Are we to remain subservient to the habit tendencies of mind, or could we go beyond and get better empowered?

If mind is allowed to act a sovereign, it will be really difficult to transgress its limitations. If, however, we align ourselves with the very powerhouse, which animates mind, we could not only overcome its limitations, but come out with our best. Going by Indian philosophic perception, force of consciousness, emanating from the Primordial-Source, projects mind as its instrument for engagement with the live world. So, mind has a dependant status. The obvious choice before us, therefore, is either to play second fiddle to the mind, an instrument, or become its master by aligning with the prime-driver, the force of consciousness.

It is, however, easier said than done. For, though mind has a secondary status, as it works on borrowed strength, it simultaneously also enjoys certain level of operational independence. Given the power of freewill, the mind offers us with freedom to make choices, carrying equal probability of its use and misuse. That makes it imperative upon us to own up the consequences of the choices made, and the implications thereof.

Often our ego unmindfully identifies itself with the indwelling tendencies of mind, and then passionately pursues them. Also, our impressionable mind gets drawn towards tempting influences of the glare and glitters of the seeming world. That further compounds our problem. Our mind, thus, gets so entrenched in its own wanderings that it does not leave much of scope to explore beyond.

Here again, applying our freewill option, we could first purify our minds of its limitations and then go beyond to align with the force of consciousness. Mind’s wholesome and omniscient power shall then be at our disposal, which may know no limits. Life may then turn into a beautiful experience.
