AEFI Orientation Training Session held at AIIMS

Department of Pediatrics, AIIMS Bhopal on 16-01-2024 hosted a comprehensive workshop aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals in the critical area of Adverse Event Following Immunization (AEFI) for doctors, resident doctors and paramedical staff of the institute.

Training is a part of a pilot project by the Ministry of health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) to improve the AEFI surveillance from medical colleges. Initially, the program is launched in 40 medical colleges across 8 states of India.

AIIMS Bhopal is the first INI among different AIIMS where this type of training has been conducted and is also the core institute for the medical colleges of Madhya Pradesh. Prof Dr Ajai Singh, Executive Director AIIMS Bhopal praised the initiative and stressed the importance of conduction of more such training program for other medical colleges of the state.

The event commenced with an insightful introduction and objective overview by Prof Dr. Mahesh Maheshwari, AIIMS Bhopal, who emphasized the importance of AEFI reporting in ensuring the safety and efficacy of immunization programs and highlighted the significance of accurate and timely reporting in maintaining public confidence in vaccination efforts.

Dr. Santosh Shukla, State Expanded Program Immunization Officer, NHM provided a firsthand account of his experiences in dealing with AEFI cases. His practical insights shed light on the challenges faced by healthcare professionals.

Prof. (Dr). Shikha Malik,Head of Department, Pediatric Medicine , AIIMS Bhopal and State AEFI chairperson and Facility nodal officer delivered a comprehensive session on the basics of AEFI and its notification process and reporting of AEFI cases.

Dr Bindu Singhal National program manager in AEFI from ITSU also addressed the participants on importance of sensitizing the medical college faculty and staff on AEFI reporting. The training program was attended by more than 80 participants including faculty from medicine, cardiology, Microbiology, CFM, obstetrics and gynaecology and Paediatrics, Senior residents nursing staff and other paramedical staff.

Dr Ravindra Babele, consultant AEFI , NHM and Miss Shivani Choubey, Project consultant and Miss Nancy also contributed in the success of the training about the Vax software.
