Congress secretary terms SC verdict on Electoral bonds a landmark decision

Friday, 16 February 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

After the Supreme Court ruled against the use of electoral bonds, declaring them illegal and imposing a ban, Parvinder Singh, the State General Secretary of the Congress party, responded to the verdict, asserting, "Where there is no transparency, there is no democracy. Today's decision by the Supreme Court is a resounding victory for the principles of accountability and openness in our democratic system."

The court's decision is seen as a critical step towards safeguarding the democratic fabric of the nation. Singh expressed concern over the perceived threat to the Constitution by the current government, stating, "Only the Supreme Court can save the Constitution of this country from the clutches of Narendra Modi and BJP. Today, it seems that the only ray of hope can come from the Supreme Court of the country."

He said that electoral bonds have been a significant source of funding for political parties in India, constituting 60% of their financial support. Shocking figures reveal that a total of 92,000 crore rupees have been donated to various political parties through electoral bonds, with the BJP alone receiving 53,00 crore rupees in such donations.

During the proceedings, the BJP government argued in the Supreme Court that citizens neither need nor have the right to access information about the donations received through electoral bonds. Critics, including Singh, allege that this stance was a deliberate attempt to shield potentially illicit financial transactions, allowing the flow of unaccounted funds to specific individuals or groups.

The electoral bond scheme, initiated by the Central Government on January 2, 2017, permitted any citizen to purchase electoral bonds individually or jointly. Although legal challenges to the scheme were raised in 2017, the hearings commenced in 2019. Today's ruling is hailed as a significant victory for transparency in political funding, addressing concerns about the potential misuse of power and financial impropriety in the country.
