A panic situation prevailed at the police headquarters in Chhattisgarh here on Tuesday when a Constable opened fire.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Raipur-Rural) Kirtan Rathore confirmed that Rakesh Yadav opened random fire. He hails from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh.

Yadav was equipped with an INSAS rifle and fired around 12 rounds.

The indication is that he fired knowingly though the Constable claims it was an accident.

No casualty was reported as most of the staff and officers were yet to report for work. The incident took place at around 9.30 am, one official said. The police headquarters is located in Nava Raipur and is in a high security zone.

On Tuesday morning, four constables from the 14th battalion of Chhattisgarh State Armed Force (CAF) were deployed at the police headquarters. Yadav was one of them.

The Constable did not escape from the spot after the incident. The police took him into custody.
