NDMC Vice-Chairman Chahal visits Virender Akhara to boost wrestling talent

In line with Prime Minister Modi’s vision for sports, athlete empowerment, and strengthening India’s global sporting excellence, NDMC Vice-Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal visited the renowned Virender Akhara in Chhara village, Jhajjar, Haryana. The akhara is one of India’s leading wrestling training centres, where young athletes prepare for national and international championships.

Head coach and Arjuna Awardee Virender Dahiya and Dushyant Lather were present during the visit, along with a large group of trainees. Wrestlers shared their experiences with Chahal, highlighting how training at Virender Akhara is giving them a strong foundation and international-level exposure.

During the interaction, Kuljeet Singh Chahal said India continues to excel in sports because of its young population and the government’s increased focus on developing sporting talent. He emphasised that sports build character, instil discipline and keep youth away from negative influences.

Chahal personally met several young wrestlers, motivating them to stay focused, work hard and remain dedicated to achieving success at the national and global levels. He also praised the coaches and the akhara’s management team for nurturing talent and offering world-class training facilities.

He informed the wrestlers about various government schemes supporting sports, including the Fit India Movement and Khelo India, which aim to identify young talent and provide improved infrastructure, coaching, and financial assistance.

Chahal highlighted Haryana’s rich wrestling tradition, which has consistently produced Olympic and international medal winners. He said akharas like Virender Akhara play a vital role in sustaining this legacy and inspiring more youngsters to pursue sports.

He also encouraged the athletes to maintain a healthy balance between sports and education, urging them to stay away from drugs and harmful habits and to focus instead on fitness and discipline.

Chahal noted that the akhara has produced several international-level wrestlers who have earned India medals at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and the Olympics. He stressed the importance of supporting such institutions to groom future champions.

He further shared that both the Central and state governments are continuously upgrading sports infrastructure across rural and urban India through new stadiums, modern facilities, and advanced sports science systems, with special focus on youth, women, and athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Before concluding his visit, Kuljeet Singh Chahal thanked the coaches and management of Virender Akhara for their commitment to developing the next generation of wrestlers. He assured them that he would raise their concerns with the relevant authorities to secure better facilities and support.

The young wrestlers expressed their excitement over Chahal’s visit, saying his encouragement had boosted their motivation and strengthened their resolve to achieve big in the world of sports.
