Days after doctors were attacked by hostile relatives of a patient, the Junior Doctors' Association (JDA) staged a protest at Hamidia Hospital on Tuesday, demanding strict legal action against the attackers and immediate improvements in hospital security to prevent future incidents.
Last Saturday, irate relatives attacked on-duty doctors, injuring three, including a junior doctor who sustained a head injury after their family member, Dolly Bai, passed away during treatment. Following the attack, more armed individuals entered the hospital and continued the assault, creating panic among medical staff.
JDA President Dr Kuldeep Gupta condemned the attack, calling it disgraceful and highlighting previous security concerns. He stated that the association had earlier written to the Chief Minister, Deputy CM, and Police Commissioner regarding the safety of doctors, but no significant action had been taken despite repeated warnings.
The association has raised concerns over frequent security lapses at Hamidia Hospital. They pointed out that a female doctor’s car was recently vandalised and that unidentified individuals often loiter on hospital premises at night, raising serious safety issues for medical professionals working late shifts.
JDA has demanded stricter security measures, including restricting unauthorised entry, removing illegal ambulances, deploying more security personnel, and installing high-mast lights. They also called for boundary walls with barbed wire and warned of further protests if security is not improved.
