Punjab’s commitment to strengthening democracy is taking deep roots through the active engagement of over 3,000 Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs) across schools, colleges, and universities. These clubs, under the guidance of the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, are playing a crucial role in promoting electoral awareness and building a generation of informed, responsible voters.
The state’s Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C emphasized the transformative impact of ELCs, stating, “Through Electoral Literacy Clubs, we are investing in the future of democracy. Empowering students with electoral knowledge at an early stage ensures they grow into active, aware, and responsible citizens.”
Adopting the “learning while doing” model, ELCs organize a host of activities such as debates, mock elections, poster-making competitions, pledge ceremonies, and awareness campaigns to instill the values of democratic participation among the youth.
To recognize and document the best initiatives, the CEO’s office launched ELC Patrika, an online newsletter showcasing success stories and innovative activities undertaken by the clubs.
Further strengthening this initiative, a dedicated ELC Portal is being developed to streamline monitoring, allowing clubs to upload real-time updates, photographs, and reports. The portal will enhance coordination and provide statewide visibility to the vibrant efforts of ELCs, making electoral literacy a cornerstone of Punjab’s democratic future.
