2 notorious criminals held after shootout in Meerut

In a joint operation by Delhi and Meerut Police, two notorious criminals, who were active members of syndicate of illegal arms suppliers, were arrested after a shootout at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh on Monday night.

The Delhi Police had earlier announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh each on their heads and the Meerut police had also declared a reward of Rs 25,000 each.

According to Pramod Singh Kushwaha, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), special cell the arrested men have been identified as Sandeep Medhak (25) and Furkan (45).

“The arrested arms peddlers were allegedly active in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and other northern states and had over a dozen cases registered against them at different police stations. They used to supply arms on demand in Delhi, Haryana, UP and many other places,” said the DCP.

 “The joint team laid a trap at Lisari gate area on Monday night. The duo was spotted riding on scooty at about 11 PM and on seeing the police both started firing.

In total, 13 rounds of fire were exchanged between the police and the accused, during which Sameer sustained an injury on his left leg.

He was rushed to a government hospital in Meerut, where he is being treated,” said the DCP.

“Six rounds were fired by the accused while seven were fired by the police team. Three bullets hit the safety jackets of three police personnel. After Sameer’s injury, the police managed to overpower the accused. A 32 bore pistol, a country made pistol, cartridges and a Scooty with a Delhi number were recovered from their possession,” said the DCP.

“During interrogation, both admitted their role in case of illegal arms supply in Delhi which is being investigated by Special Cell. Furkan confessed that he used to run illegal firearms manufacturing unit in a house in Meerut where he had commissioned experts of arms manufacturing from Munger, Bihar,” the DCP said.

“Furkan, earlier used to bring these illegal arms from Munger. For the last many months, he started his own unit of arms manufacturing in Meerut where he had engaged experts from Munger. By the arrest of Furkan and Samir and earlier arrested five of their associates by Special Cell, complete syndicate has been smashed,” the DCP added.
