223 animals, birds die in N’kanan in 3 yrs

As many as 223 animals and birds have died in the Nandankanan Zoological Park during the last three years between 2015-16 and 2017-18.

Forests and Environment Minister Bijayshree Routray informed this in the State Assembly in response to a question of BJD MLA Anubhab Patnaik on Wednesday.

According o the information, 62 mammals, 27 birds and 11 reptiles died in 2015.

The Mammals included tiger, deer, lion cub, nilgai, bear blackbuck and sambar. Similarly, the birds included pineapple conure, violet turaco, open bill stork, red chattering lorry, Barbary drove, sun conure and mandarin duck and the reptiles included 10 gharial crocodiles and a water monitor lizard.

The Minister informed that the zoo authorities have taken many measures to check death of animals and birds.
