Thursday, 13 December 2018 | PNS | Chandigarh

Amid the political turmoil SAD is facing, its prominent leader and former Army Chief General JJ Singh (retired) on Wednesday resigned from the party citing personal reasons. General JJ Singh, also the president of the SAD ex-servicemen wing, had written to the SAD president Sukhbir Badal to inform him about the decision.

“I wish to inform you with a heavy heart that I have resigned from the Shiromani Akali Dal and from the position of president of Shiromani Akali Dal ex-servicemen wing with immediate effect due to personal reasons,” he stated in his letter.

General JJ Singh, a former Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, had joined the Akali Dal on the eve 2017 Punjab elections and had unsuccessfully contested against the Congress veteran Capt Amarinder Singh, now Punjab Chief Minister, from his bastion Patiala.

Former Army chief’s entry to SAD was his first political stint. Even as General JJ Singh has not come out in open to talk about his decision and his future course of action, it has been learnt that he was unhappy with the functioning of the party, and inaccessibility of its leadership.

Sources in formed that General JJ Singh was not happy with the way things were taking shape in the Akali Dal.

“Being an Army man, he was doing his bit to contribute in the party. He was thehead of ex-servicemen wing and he wanted to expend its base down to the grassroot level. But, it seems thing could not work out,” said a senior SAD leader.

General JJ Singh has been keeping his cards close to his chest regarding his future in politics.
