In the matter of establishing a permanent campus for the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, the High Court of Uttarakhand has sought replies from the Centre, State and NIT in three weeks. The division bench of chief justice Ramesh Ranganathan and justice Alok Singh issued this direction on Friday.
A former student Jasvir Singh had filed a PIL stating that nine years after it was formed, NIT still lacks a permanent campus.
The petitioner averred that the government is not addressing the long standing demand for a permanent campus. The institute building used presently is not in good condition which could also lead to a mishap. The petitioner further said that one of the students demanding a permanent campus had died in a road accident while another was seriously injured. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the division bench has sought replies from the Central Government, State Government and NIT in three weeks.
Recently, following talk of shifting the NIT to another location in the plains, chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat had said that work was underway to facilitate construction of a permanent campus in Srinagar.
