Percussionist Banamali Maharana dies

Bhubaneswar: Eminent percussionist Banamali Maharana passed away at a private hospital here today. He was 83. He was undergoing treatment due to age-related ailments. Maharana was honoured with the prestigious Upendra Bhanja Samman for the year 2016 for his lifelong contribution to music.

Ganjam Forester held taking bribe

Brahmapur: The Vigilance police on Friday caught Ganjam district’s Khallikote Forest Range Purushottampur Beat House Forester Siba Behera red-handed for demanding and accepting illegal gratification of Rs 5,000. He was caught taking the bribe near forest gate from Prabhakar Maharana of Arakhapur village in Ganjam district for not initiating any forest case against him. Behera was arrested and forwarded to court. His rented residential house at Nilachala Nagar, 4th Lane in Brahmapur and his quarter at Purushottampur were searched.

Bomb blast critically injures 2 brothers in K’jhar

Keonjhar: Two brothers sustained critical injuries after a bomb buried at a forest exploded near Banida village under the Pandapada police limits in Keonjhar district on Saturday. The incident took place when Kedar Juanga and his brother Mukunda Juanga had gone to the forest for attending nature’s call. The intensity of the explosion was so high that Kedar lost consciousness. He was admitted to the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack. Though the origin of the bomb was yet to be ascertained, it was suspected that it was planted by someone for hunting boars.

Mahanagar Book Fair begins in Brahmapur

Brahmapur: The Mahanagar Book Fair organised by the Ganjam District Book Fair Committee was inaugurated here Saturday. Brahmapur Development Authority Chairman Subash Maharana, former Administrator Rajnikant Mahapatra, poet and Doordarshan anchor Malay Kumar Rout attended as guests. Among others, Book Fair Committee president Susant Dash, secretary Ajit Kumar Sabat and vice-president B Satyam Achari were present.

Zonal Polytechnic Fest kicks off in B’pur

Brahmapur: The four-day Zonal Polytechnic Festival 2018-19 organised by the Skill Development and Technical Education Department at the SMIT Diploma Engendering College kicked off here on Friday. Uma Charan Pattnaik Engineering School, Brahmapur Principal Surjya Narayan Dhal inaugurated the event and flagged of the sports competitions. Sports events like cricket, football, badminton and others were held along with the quiz competitions. SMIT College Principal Sudhansu Mohan Padhy was present.

KJSA to develop weightlifting coaching centre

Rourkela: The KJS Alluwalia (KJSA) Group of Industries recently signed a MoU with Sate Government and Anil Kumble’s organisation Tenvic Foundation to develop a world-class weightlifting coaching centre at Bhubaneswar. The group would support the Tenvic Foundation with an amount of Rs 55 crore from its CSR fund to develop the centre at the Kalinga Stadium in next five years and appointment of fulltime world class coaches. KJSA group MD Prasant Alluwalia said, “We are happy that we have got the opportunity to contribute something for the improvement of sports in general and weightlifting in particular.”

SBI Mutual Fund branch opened at Angul

Bhubaneswar: The SBI Mutual Fund opened its 7th branch in Odisha at Angul on Friday being inaugurated by SBI Bhubaneswar Circle Chief General Manager Praveena Kala in the presence of General Managers Devi Shanker Mishra and Goutam Bhattacharya. Kala said the branch would create awareness of mutual fund products at Angul and nearby areas.

Athagarh Press Club holds Press Day

Athagarh: The Athagarh Press Club observed the National Press Day on Friday by conducting a seminar on “Media at Present” in which eminent journalists and litterateurs expressed their views. The mediapersons remembered Karmaveer Gouri Shankar Ray, father of Odisha journalism, and vowed to work without bias for the betterment of the society. Litterateur Dr Narayan Panda suggested different methods for journalists to follow by which they would be remembered by the coming generations. Club president Dinesh Das presided over the meeting.

National Press Day observed at Jharsuguda

Jharsuguda: A district-level National Press Day was observed at a meeting here being presided over by DRDA PD SN Das and district Collector Bibhuti Bhusan Patnaik inaugurating it. Prof Tapan Barik, Press Club president Santosh Misha and general secretary Mehboob Mahtab and Jhsuguda District Journalist Association president Nalendra Kumar Gajendra attended as guests of honour. A seminar on “Journalism ethics and challenges in digital era” was held in which journalists Sanjay Lodha, Prasant Mohanty, Subhas Pradhan, Sanjiv Patjoshi, BK Tiwary, Prabharanjan Mishra and others spoke. DIPRO Ajay Kumar Jena coordinated the programme.

Vedanta DAV gets Swachchh Vidyalaya award

Bhawanipatna: The Vedanta DAV International School, Lanjigarh received the State-level ‘Swachh Vidyalaya’ award on Friday in Bhubaneswar. School Principal Shukla Chakraborty received the award from Education Minister Badri Narayan Patra and Bhubaneswar MP Prasanna Patsani, UNICEF WASH Project head and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation Mayor Anata Narayan Jena. The Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar was instituted by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2016 to recognise, inspire and celebrate excellence in sanitation and hygiene practice in schools.
