Journalists stage protest, seek FIR against senior officials

POver100 media persons on Friday staged a protest at the Lalpur Police Station in Ranchi against police assault on them during State Foundation Day function at Morhabadi ground.

Notably, during the lathi charge against para teachers at Morhabadi ground on Thursday the police had also beaten up several journalists who were present on the spot to cover police action.

The journalists lodged complaint against the senior officials including SP City Aman Kumar, SP Rural Ajit Peter Dundung, SP Traffic Sanjay Singh and sub-divisional officer Garima Singh and the jawans in connection with the incident.

The journalists stated that they had gone to the venue to cover the function after receiving an invitation from the government. They added during the programme police resorted to lathi charge on para teachers staging protest near the venue adding several photo journalists went to the spot to take pictures of the police action. They said police, however, started beating them up with lathi breaking cameras of several journalists.

They added that camera of several media persons was also snatched by police personnel in the presence of SP City Aman Kumar, SP Rural Ajit Peter Dundung, SP Traffic Sanjay Singh and sub-divisional officer Garima Singh and the photos related to lathi-charge were deleted.

General Secretary of Ranchi Press Club Sambhu Choudhary who was present during the protest at Lalpur police station stated they would file a PIL with the High Court for implementation of journalist protection act.

DSP Pran Ranjan said police was studying the compliant adding action would be taken as per law.
