The Bharatiya Janata Party has formed a 20 member committee for the urban local body polls to be held shortly in the State. Elaborating on this, the BJP State president Ajay Bhatt said that the poll committee will meet at the BJP State office here on October 18. He also accused the Congress of levelling hollow allegations at the BJP of trying to defer the local body polls.

Addressing the media at the BJP State office here on Tuesday, Bhatt said that the party and State are ready for the local body polls in Uttarakhand. He said, “We have formed a 20-member election committee for the local body elections.

For undertaking the party’s works in the municipal corporation areas, we have assigned the onus to a senior party leader and a local leader in each of the municipal corporation area.

Among others, the poll committee includes three former Chief Ministers and the current Lok Sabha MPs. The poll committee will hold its meeting in the party State office here on October 18. The selection of candidates for mayoral and other posts in the local bodies will be done either by the night of October 18 or morning of October 19,” he added.

Bhatt, further, flayed the opposition for projecting as if the BJP and State Government had been trying to defer the local body polls. “They were accusing us of trying to defer the polls and violating the constitution. In reality, we wanted the polls to held in April. The Government too had started preparations for this but then due to public interest litigation filed in the high court and subsequent developments, the election could not be held at that time.”
