Raman's sycophant coterie did him in

Friday, 14 December 2018 | Sujeet Kumar

A whitewash of BJP in Chhattisgarh is a classic lesson for an arrogant regime how to behave in governance. Nobody is born with certificate or authority to rule people in democracy forever.

The outgoing Chief Minister Raman Singh was no doubt a thorough gentleman but he groomed a set of quality arrogants around him and they had authority to call shots on behalf of him which engineered his ultimate downfall.

Doctor-turned politician Singh was appointed Chief Minister of the mineral-rich State in Dec 2003 by default but he consolidated his position smartly and downsised his all opponents in party while posturing himself as a sober and innocent politician.

Singh had taken public support granted and had entirely relied on his coterie and sycophants to prioritise public needs and execution of welfare programmes.

Excessive dependency on coterie snapped his (Raman Singh) all links with public and gradually he got disconnected from common people despite repeatedly alarmed by his party leaders who too were struggling to get time to even meet him.

Raman Singh will always cherish his memories as Chief Minister and it was an absolute privilege for him to lead BJP for a period of 15 years in a state which is home to India's probably most innocent and caring people. But he would surely like to forget the way he lost polls and heavily embarrassed his party and let down millions of party cadres.

Most importantly that he completely failed to assess public mood mainly the farmers and youth who felt ‘ditched and cheated’ by the BJP regime by consistent lies.

Intellectuals in the state had largely treated Raman Singh as their blue-eyed boy for his decent interaction quality but in past couple of years a majority of intellectuals and social figures were ill-treated by the coterie and he remained silent despite knowing everything.

The brutal killings of almost entire Congress State leadership by Maoists in Raman Singh's regime in May 2013, will always haunt him personally. People still argue why the Congress leaders left unprotected in Maoist den despite they pleaded for a proper security coverat Jheeram valley in Bastar. Anyhow, this incident will always be categorised as a slur on BJP Government in Chhattisgarh.

Now the Raman Singh Government bit the dust and Congress is celebrating an unexpected mammoth two-third victory in a 90-member State Assembly, the Congress must remember people keep account of every party and every leader. Today's celebration could turn into tomorrow's cry if Congress dares to insult huge public mandate.
