As the city celebrates National Day of Spain, we explore what the event night had to offer
Not many people might know that October 12, 1942, the day that Christopher Colombus first landed on American land is known as the National Day of Spain or Fiesta Nacional de España or Dia de la Hispanidad. This was on account of the fact that the expedition was sponsored by King Ferdinand of Spain.
While the celebrations were on in Spain, India celebrated the historic day at the Embassy of Spain in India recently.
José Ramón Barañano, Ambassador of Spain to India, hosted the grand evening which saw people and guests from various international embassies celebrating the event. The white and yellow lights around the lush green lawn brought in a festive vibe at the embassy, with food and wine and beer stalls around the corners.
There were a number of Spanish delicacies spread across the tables. From Spanish Paella to various Indian snacks like samosas and chilli pakodas, Italian pizza and pasta, grilled meat and desserts created the perfect mood for the celebrations.
Fernando Bustamante, CEO at Mahou India believed that such events bring the two countries and their cultures closer. Spanish tourism and travel has also been a part of many of the Indian films and shows, especially the much-loved, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaraa. Bustamante said that that it was their endeavour to bring together the two cultures and see that getting along more through such films.
