Till the soil

NIDHI PANT tells you reasons why agriculture is a good option

A recent economic survey mentioned that agriculture sector is set to grow by 2.1 per cent in the current fiscal year and the growth rate is suspected to become even better in the following years.

Remote-controlled drones, powerful exposing cameras, and several other technologies used to control  biomass development and fertilisation standing of the crops have given a new definition to farm management. These devices are even helpful in understanding the health of crops and collect data from time to time to calculate their growth.

Unlike the previous years, agriculture in coming years is no longer going to be viewed as only growing crops or even animal husbandry. It will also include a discipline that emphasises on the areas such as entrepreneurship, geography, social science and conservation.

Students from different parts of the country are taking an active interest in the future of agriculture and how they can be a part of it.

Agriculture economy or Agronomy is a discipline that focuses on plant and soil sciences, helping agencies to look out for ways in which they can get better and faster yields by sustainably optimising the farm. Working with business to finds ways to both optimising yields and foster sustainable farming. It also make use of applied economics with precise research and explore ways to maximise the utilisation of natural resources in the fields.

Among many emerging career opportunities that can benefit the students as well as the sectoral scenario of India, is Data Scientist. Since data exists everywhere, in agriculture a data scientist is required to understand process behavior and buyers’ behavior to create patterns that can help improve business operations.

Another breaking-through profession is Robotic Programming. As robots are already taking over the human machines in order to perform medical procedures, modern errands, research space, defuse bombs, and more unreasonable and risky tasks, it is imperative to have them on lands. Not just the usual robots, but humanoid robots that can walk, talk, and express feelings like us are making their way to fields. With this field moving towards agriculture having incredible potential, there is a demand for practitioners to manufacture and program them. Robotics engineering, hence, gives the information of hardware building, machine learning, neural systems, PC programming, computerised reasoning, mechanical designing, to make a specialist.

In countries where land produce cover the major source of revenue, an undergraduate-level understanding of agriculture is as important as the land itself. And when these rich lands move towards modernity and sustainability, the industry is bound to grow.
