Final call on Dhawan in 12 days: Bangar

Thursday, 13 June 2019 | PNS | Nottingham

The nation may need to know right away but Team India assistant coach Sanjay Bangar says a final call on opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan, who fractured his left hand in the game against Australia, will be taken only after 10 to 12 days. “He is too precious to be ruled out just yet,” he added at the pre-match Press conference.

Clearing the confusion over the replacement, he announced that Rishabh Pant would be flying in as standby and joining the team practice sessions from Manchester onwards.

An injured Dhawan, who batted for 20 long overs and made a century after being hit on his hand, will miss at least three or four games till when, Bangar suggested, the replacement will come from within the team 15.

“It will, however, be good for Pant to practice with the team and be match ready if at all Dhawan is ruled out of the tournament,” he said.

“Since Dhawan's assessment will take 10-12 days, till that point of time, we wanted to make sure if and when the replacement is required and I am saying if and when, then it is always good to have a replacement player coming in and practising with the team as a stand-by,” Bangar added.

“As far as Shikhar is concerned, we are observing him and it will take some time, around 10 or 12 days to figure out where he stands. We will be in a better position to take a call then because we don't want to rule out a precious player like Shikhar, straight at the time of the injury," Bangar said.

Dhawan is slated to be out of the games at least against New Zealand, Pakistan and Afghanistan, and maybe West Indies on June 27.
