43 bootleggers held for smuggling illicit liquor

With Holi festival round the corner, the national Capital also witnesses the steep rise of illicit liquor. So far in month of March, the sleuths of Delhi Police have arrested 43 bootleggers for allegedly smuggling illicit liquor from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh (UP). Yet in another break-through, Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested two notorious smugglers in two separate incidents. 

The accused has been identified as Sumit Kumar (27) who was a resident of Faridabad and Chitranjan Kumar (23) a resident of Delhi’s Okhla.

According to Chinmoy Biswal, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of South-East district said following the Holi festival police has already intensified patrolling in the area and pickets have been placed at various points to keep check on liquor suppliers.

“In first incident, during patrolling on March 16 at 6AM, police team gathered information about a liquor smuggler. Acting on the information, a trap was laid under Nehru Nagar Railway Bridge and when at around 6.45 am, a Chevrolet Optra Car was seen coming from Okhla Mandi side which was signaled the driver to stop but the car driver tried to flee but was soon overpowered by the police team,” said Biswal.

“The driver of the car identified as Sumit Kumar had a total 65 cartons of Haryana liquor, 45 cartons containing 2250 quarters of desi alcohol, 13 cartons containing 624 quarters of Besto Whisky and 6 cartons containing 288 quarters of Officers Choice Blue pure grain whisky were seized from the car.” said the DCP.

“In the other incident, on March 17 at 8 pm, during checking, a person riding a tri-cycle rickshaw was seen coming from Surajkund side. The rickshaw was equipped with sack of rags. However, the police team got suspicious about the movement of the rickshaw and they intercepted it. Under the sack of rags liquor cartons were concealed,” said the DCP.

“On checking, total 09 cartons containing five cartons of 250 quarters of country made (desi) alcohol and four cartons of 192 quarters of Besto whisky “For sale in Haryana” were seized from the rickshaw puller Chitranjan Kumar.” said the DCP.

“During interrogation both the accused Chitranjan and Sumit confessed that they used to sell liquor illegally as they wanted to earn money quickly,” the DCP said.

“In the month of March itself, 43 liquor smugglers and bootleggers have been arrested and more than 20,000 quarters of liquor has been seized. Delhi is still on High-Alert and the investigation is still going on.” added the DCP.
