The Chandauli police nabbed five bootleggers and recovered smuggled liquor worth Rs 1 crore in a crackdown against liquor smugglers on Saturday.
Those arrested were identified as Dalveer, Mahendra and Bhupendra of Haryana, Ramu of Kannauj and Ramesh of Etah district.
The police also recovered two trucks used for transporting the contraband and a Scorpio SUV from the accused.
During interrogation, the accused are reported to have owned up their crime and revealed that the contraband contained 2,580 cartons of Indian Made Foreign Liquor.
A Chandauli police spokesman said that personnel of Sayed Raja police station were tipped-off about movement of the liquor smugglers and laid a trap in Ramaupur village from where the trucks were to pass.
“The police team stopped the vehicles and recovered the smuggled goods. The accused, some of whom were travelling by the SUV, were subsequently nabbed,” the police spokesman said.
