Critically ill Basanti Bai, a resident of Punjabi Para in Mahasamund, on Thursday set an example for all the electors by turning up to vote before being admitted to a hospital.
The 65-year-old woman had been vomiting since Wednesday night and she needed immediate medical attention.
This morning when her daughter wanted to take her to hospital, she insisted first she should be allowed to cast vote.
Doctors say Basanti Bai got lungs infection and she was undergoing treatment for the last one month. Her condition deteriorated last night as water filled her lungs.
She could barely stand and balance her frail body when, as per her wish, she was taken to Pitiyajhar based Shri Ram Paathshala polling centre number 208 at 9.00 am.
The polling centre falls in the Mahasamund Lok Sabha constituency.
After casting her vote, she felt relaxed. She was then rushed to a local nursing hospital where she is undergoing treatment. “The festival of democracy comes once in five years, illness comes and goes,” Basanti Bai said.
